No two workspaces are alike. It would thus be foolhardy to lay out terms of engagement for workplaces as a whole but it is possible to point out some common points between organizations and how work can be improved in them. Most people spend eight hours and more a day at their workplace and that can be a major chunk of time each day and week. 

With that said, here are 10 tips to help you improve the quality of your work life: 

1. Setting Milestones

Most employees tend to give the best output when their work is benchmarked against some standard. Milestones are points along the career and indeed the daily routines of workers so that they get to know that they have achieved something every day. This is why setting milestones are important to improve the quality of life at work. 

2. Planning Out Priorities

Prioritizing work helps get people to be better organized. It tells workers which tasks need more attention and focus and tends to plan out their work ahead of the execution. For the management, planning well tends to put the best people to the toughest tasks so that a uniform standard is maintained in the work output. 

3. Getting the Meetings Right

One of the common stress points that most workers tend to identify in organizations is meetings. It is necessary to hold meetings to have one-on-one sessions with the entire team. This helps build a rapport with each other and at the same time provides space for brainstorming. One of the easiest and common ways that work life can be put out of balance is to not stress enough on getting the meetings right. 

Most offices and businesses tend to meet up at least once a week. It is important to prepare each participant ahead of meetings by sending out emails and other important communication that points to better participation at the meetings. 

4. Communicate Better

It might sound trivial when people have to be trained at communicating better with others. Often businesses tend to take this part of the workplace for granted. But more than just training people to be better communicators there are some pro-active steps that organizations could take to make things easier to communicate with each other. 

One such step is to get to inform people at the work space where each one stands. This hierarchy, if established early, would tend to smoothen out the later days as the newcomers tend to look to learn and perform better under the guidance of the senior members of the staff.

5. Set an Order in Tasks

The best part of having an organized workplace is to have people perform the harder tasks first and then the easier work. This might seem rather an obvious step but most of the time people have a difficult time understanding what are hard tasks and easy tasks. The right action would be to lay out leaders who could identify what can be classified as easy tasks and not so easy tasks. 

6. Eliminate Interruptions

Be it a process or decision chain, interruptions are what must be avoided at all costs. Not only would they slow down work, the start stop way of doing things would only demoralize the workspace as a whole. The right approach is to start a work stream and continue it till the end of the cycle. 

7. Acknowledge Strengths and Weaknesses

As a team it is better to identify the strength of the team as a whole and the strength of the individual members of the team. This works on identifying weaknesses as well and would reflect on the working of the whole organization most of the time. 

Once strengths and weaknesses are identified, it makes things much simpler by allowing people to work to their strengths and have someone else cover for their weaknesses. Thus, the team as a whole remains as strong as ever. The weaker members are covered for by the stronger members of the team. 

8. Know the Limitations

No matter however strong that the team happens to be, there is bound to be limitations to people and teams as a whole. It is best to understand these limitations and to work within the limits of the workers. This would ensure a better quality of work life as people are working to their strengths and not exposed to their weaknesses. 

9. Finishing Up

It is important to finish what has been started by each individual of the team. This is easier said than done as often it is seen that some team members are good at initiating something only to leave it hanging for others to complete. What then happens is that certain team members are seen as initiators and thus the hard workers which in turn diminishes the other team members’ efforts. 

10. The Right Tools

When out to do a job, it is important to have the right set of tools. This ensures that the work gets done fast and with quality finish. This would improve the quality of the product as well as the quality of the workspaces. 


There are no shortcuts to ensuring a good quality of work life and mostly it is through a series of trial and error that workers and organizations come to the winning combination. At the same time, it is important to understand what features to focus on improving, to provide a better work space.
